2014, AsF Report 0009.01
This report examines a medieval sewing-thimble found during excavation of a prehistoric site at Dolbenmaen, Gwynedd. Details of its manufacture and decoration suggest that it has few close parallels, and it is proposed that it was made at an as yet unknown location in southern Britain.

A late-medieval 'lyre-shaped' buckle from the Durham River Wear Assemblage2022 •
This research report presents the findings of a study on artefact 'Elvet Bridge 4027', a previously unidentified buckle recovered from the River Wear in Durham, England. The report explores the possible materials and methods used in the construction of the artefact, and discusses the significance of the decorative elements present on the buckle in the context of early 15th-century English society. Possibilities of who the object may have belonged to are also discussed. The report provides information on the regional context of the find site and the materials used in the production of medieval buckles in England. A crux of this research arises when delving deep into the widely accepted dating for this typology of buckle. It is discovered that the brass effigies, which have been the basis for assigning a date of 1390-1420 to similar buckles, do not actually depict a 'lyre-shaped' buckle on the depicted deceased. Instead, they only show a 'lyre-shaped' strap end and/or a square-shaped buckle. This research challenges the previously held beliefs about the dating of this typology of buckle.
The textiles from Over Barrow, Cambridgeshire, England present the opportunity to examine the burial practices at the end of the Early Bronze Age. They were excavated from a pit pyre cremation along with cremated bone, a bone needle/pin and two small sherds of a collared urn. Preserved in charred clumps of multiple layers, they have the potential to provide clues as to how the textiles were used in the cremation, for example, whether they were used as clothing, shrouds or for other purpose such as binding strips. These possibilities raise a number of questions as to the role of textiles in Bronze Age cremation burials in the early second millennium BC in Britain.
The use of the sewing needle in Western Europe dates back to the Late Upper Palaeolithic. The terms denoting this instrument in the older PIE languages are highly divergent. The present article discusses their etymologies and the conclusions to be drawn from the combination of linguistic and archaeological data.

Archaeological Textiles Review
Analysis and conservation of a Bronze Age linen textile from Suffolk, UK2023 •
A rare Bronze Age linen textile was found inside a socketed axe, part of a bronze age hoard dating to circa 800 BCE, discovered in Somerleyton, Suffolk, in the 1920s. The recent loan of the objects from the hoard provided the opportunity for a collaborative study of the fragmentary textile and its original context and significance. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were undertaken to update and inform interpretations of its condition, character and function. The remounting of the textile was necessary for display. The conservation challenges this raised, and the solutions found, are detailed here. The wider study of the metalwork associated with the hoard and of the current state of knowledge regarding Bronze Age textiles in Britain allowed for several hypotheses to be put forward about the textile’s functional significance in efficient hafting techniques and its potential votive symbolism. The Somerleyton textile serves as a reminder of the need to contextualise Bronze Age metalwork within wider networks of (organic) materials and the potential of older collections to provide new insights.

VII PURPUREAE VESTES INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, Granada
Weaving on the ground: positive and negative evidence towards a reconstruction of the prehistoric horizontal loom (programme download)2019 •
2010 •
The NESAT symposium has grown from the first meeting in 1981 which was attended by 23 scholars, to over 100 at the tenth meeting that took place in Copenhagen in 2008, with virtually all areas of Europe represented. The 50 papers from the conference presented here show the vibrance of the study of archaeological textiles today. Examples studied come from the Bronze Age, Neolithic, the Iron Age, Roman, Viking, the Middle Ages and post-Medieval, and from a wide range of countries including Norway, Czech Republic, Poland, Greece, Germany, Lithuania, Estonia and the Netherlands. Modern techniques of analysis and examination are also discussed.
